A TRAVEL NEWS ARTICLE ABOUT THE UNITED KINGDOM
The market town of Chesterfield in the north east of Derbyshire can be rightly proud of its church with its famous twisted spire, but it is also making a name for itself with the ‘foodie’ fraternity who are drawn to the western side of this historic town and its Chatsworth Road.
Tucked in among the shops and a number of pubs, restaurants, cafés and takeaways of the Chatsworth Road are three unique tasting experiences.
Lets start at 193 Chatsworth Road, home to the Northern Tea Merchants whose family connections with tea and coffee date back to1926 and the present owner’s grandfather. From small beginnings, delivering tea door-to-door from an Austin 7 van, the family-owned business has today expanded to manufacturing over 100 million cups of tea and coffee per year.
Tea and coffee imported from around the world are brought to the premises and then distributed to destinations across the UK, Europe, America and Asia. In the UK you will find their products in any number of stately homes, supermarkets, restaurants and cafés. Apart from their shops, and an on-line facility, selling a staggering number of teas and coffees there is also a café offering the opportunity to taste some of Northern Tea Merchants delicious brews. Inside The Northern Tearooms
Tea and coffee not quite strong enough?, then move along to 415 Chatsworth Road and the Real Ale Corner, Chesterfield’s first, and only, independent specialist in bottled beer, real ales and cider from surrounding local breweries. They can also supply draught real ales. In February 2010 the company won the award of Independent Beer Retailer of the Year. The list of beers, ales and ciders to purchase and take home reads like a beer drinker’s idea of heaven. Visit www.therealalecorner.co.uk
Maybe wine is your favourite tipple? Italy came to Chesterfield when Nonosolovino opened its wine shop and restaurant at 417 Chatsworth Road. It is the only wine shop outside London where visitors can experience a revolutionary wine tasting system, and the only place in the UK where all the wines sold are Italian.
Nonosolovino (Italian for not only wine) has installed a highly specialised ‘Enomatic’ preservation system offering a ‘try before you buy’ facility. Wine tasters use a pre-paid card to sample from 16 different wines chosen from choice independent Italian vineyards. The special sampling cabinet uses an inert gas system, which keeps oxygen away from the wine even during pouring, consequently the remaining wine does not deteriorate through oxidisation and stays in perfect condition and temperature whatever the colour. Nonosolovino also stocks exclusively imported Italian wine on draught with free sampling. In addition, traditional and contemporary Italian produce is available to buy, while the stylish, minimalist restaurant serves Italian dishes at lunch or dinner. Visit www.nonosolovino.co.uk
