FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2017
St. Moritz is hosting the 2017 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships from 6 – 19 February 2017. Situated in the canton of Graubünden, St. Moritz stages the World Ski Championships for the fifth time, following the successes of 1934, 1948, 1974 and 2003.
New route for SWISS
Swiss International Air Lines will be running a new route from London City Airport to Sion in the Valais once a week for two weeks in February 2017. The perfect choice for those looking to waste no time and hit the surrounding slopes. As with all SWISS flights, skis travel free alongside checked luggage.
The Snow Centre goes Swiss
The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead has a new Swiss look. Switzerland Tourism and Valais/Wallis Promotion have entered a three year partnership with the closest indoor slope to London, which now features views of the Valais Alps throughout the interior. Look out for joint trips to Switzerland.
New Nordic Arena, Kandersteg
The new national Nordic Arena in Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland will be open for its first winter season since completion. Athletes can train on three slopes, which have been built to comply with the latest International Ski Federation (FIS) standards, meaning future international competitions can be held there .www.nordicarena.ch
A ‘laser’ chairlift for Klosters
On the Madrisa side of Klosters a new chairlift is opening
for the winter season. Uniquely, the height of the seats will automatically be adjusted to the height of each passenger thanks to a laser measuring system. The new Schaffürggli lift is fully automated and therefore the perfect fit for different sized people and especially children.
Porsche Design lift for Engadin St. Moritz
On 19 November, the opening day of the Corvatsch mountain, a new 6-seater chairlift from Porsche Design will await guests. With a length of 2,200m it will be one of the longest lifts in the Graubünden area, serving the Curtinella piste, connecting the Silvaplana-Corvatsch and Sils-Furtschellas sides of the resort.
New fatbiking slope in Villars
A new 4km fatbiking slope will open in December allowing bike enthusiasts to enjoy the spectacular panoramic views of Villars in the Lake Geneva Region. Once a week, an accompanied downhill fatbike run will be combined with an evening fondue, taking visitors from Roc d’Orsay to Villars offering spectacular panoramic views.
Winter kayaking on Lake Brienz
When winter comes, many people turn their attention only on snow. This winter, guests can look to the water too with guided kayak tours on Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland even when the weather turns cold, thanks to high-grade dry suits. The tour lasts about two hours and will let them explore the winter landscape from a new, stunning perspective.
50 years of the Schilthorn – Piz Gloria
Piz Gloria, the revolving restaurant that sits atop the Schilthorn, celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2017. Made famous in the James Bond film ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, the iconic restaurant will see an extravaganza of anniversary events allowing guests to follow in the footsteps of James Bond.
Klosters Masters World Cup
The Cross Country Masters World Cup ski race returns to Switzerland after 18 years from 2 – 11 March 2017. Organised by the worldwide association of cross country skiers, around 1,100 people will meet in Klosters to compete in 30 different races over six days.
New aquatics complex in Villars
A new aquatics and wellness centre opens in the Villars Sports Centre this December. The swimming area includes indoor and outdoor leisure pools, an outdoor water slide for the summer and an outdoor pool heated throughout the year. Visitors to the wellness centre will be able to enjoy a sauna offering a panoramic view of the Alps.
Winter golf in Crans-Montana
As an outstanding Alpine golf destination, Crans-Montana will host a brand new snow golf event, which will take place from 1-5 February 2017. The idea is to allow golfers of all levels to enjoy a completely unique experience in a magical winter setting and on the legendary Jack Niklaus course.
Dog sledding race in Haslital
The legendary dog sled race at the foot of the Susten Pass in the Bernese Oberland will be held on 25-26 February. Impressive scenes are guaranteed with more than 100 teams of mushers and dogs travelling from all over the world to Gadmen for the event. The 2017 programme includes dog sled rides for children – perfect for young dog lovers!
Giacometti in Zurich
50 years after the death of renowned Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti, a major exhibition ‘Alberto Giacometti – Beyond Bronze’ takes place in the Kunsthaus Zurich from 28 October 2016 – 15 January 2017. At the heart of the presentation are 75 original plasters from the artist’s estate, having been examined by experts and prepared for this exhibition as part of a multi-year research project.
Tinguely Museum Basel
Swiss sculptor Jean Tinguely’s inimitable creations usually generate noises, sounds and apparently random music.
This musical aspect is most apparent with his four “Méta-Harmonie” music machines. A new exhibition at the Tinguely Museum in Basel from October until January will provide a unique opportunity to experience these large-scale and versatile sound boxes in dialogue with one another.
The figurative Pollock in Basel
The exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Basel from 2 October until 22 January presents a representative survey of the evolution of Jackson Pollock’s figurative art from the mid- 1930s to the 1950s. Comprising around 100 paintings and works on paper, it will feature major works from private collections as well as eminent pieces on loan from European, Japanese, Australian and American museums.
Elevation 1049 Exhibition in Gstaad
Avalanches, their power, dynamics and the unexpected are the curatorial point of departure for the next winter show by British curator Neville Wakefield and Swiss artist Olympia Scarry. The exhibition will launch over the weekend of 3-5 February 2017 and will feature an international programme of music, performance and sound installations.
‘Fiore di Pietra’ by Mario Botta
A new restaurant is being built at the summit of Monte Generoso in Ticino and will be open by spring 2017. The designer of the ‘Fiore di Pietra’, literally meaning ‘stone flower’ is the world-renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta. Its position on the cliff edge is breathtaking and offers visitors a stunning 360-degree view on the surrounding landscape.
Weissenstein Nordic Centre
The winter sports facilities on the Weissenstein now include a cross-country ski trail, located in the area between the Restaurant Sennhaus and the Hinter-Weissenstein mountain inn. The trail is more than six kilometres long and includes both a classic and a skating track. In good snow conditions, the trail is open from Friday to Sunday between 18 December 2015 and 13 March 2016.
Snow Bike Festival, Gstaad
The Snow Bike Festival has seen competitors from across the globe congregate in the unique region of GSTAAD (Switzerland), ensuring a genuinely international atmosphere. Europe’s winter festival of snow biking is a heady mix of fun, both on and off the slopes. The third edition will take place in GSTAAD from January 19th to 22nd, 2017 and will feature a 4 Day Stage Race, Eliminator Night Race, Fat Bike and MTB EXPO as well as lots of partying.
Pizol: new chairlift ‘Schwamm’
For the 2016/2017 winter season the old T-bar lift “Schwamm” has been replaced by a modern 6-seater chairlift for maximum comfort.
‘Pisten-Bully’ experience, Grächen
In the Valais resort of Grächen, tourists can be part of the pist-preparation by joining the preparation team in their 420 PS machines to drive up the pists to prepare the next day.
New Oberalp Chairlift, Andermatt-Sedrun
As part of the connection of the Andermatt Sedrun Skiarena Project, a new 6-seater chairlift will open for the new winter-season and replace the old T-bar lift at the Oberalppass to Calmut.
New lift for Montana – Cry d’Er, Crans Montana
In Crans Montana two new lifts will replace the old cablecars and chairlifts and will lead to a faster and more comfortable transfer. There will be a new 10-seater chairlift from Montana to Arnouva followed by a new 6-seater from Arnouva to Cry d’Er.
Fondue in the snow, Mount Pizol
From this winter you can enjoy a delicious fondue in the snow, far from the bustle of the slopes. We’ve put together everything you need in a rucksack; now all you have to do is find a secluded spot and wait for the cheese to melt.
Fairy-tale Balloon Festival, Grächen
The Fairy-tale Balloon Festival will be held on the Hannigalp in Grächen for the first time. Over six days, you’ll have a unique opportunity to take off from the Hannigalp in a hot-air balloon and enjoy a magical experience.www.graechen.ch
Sechsi Schällata, Klosters
Klosters heralds the arrival of winter. On 4 December 2016, the “Sechsi Schällata” marks the start of a new tradition as the Klosters Hotel Association celebrates the official start of winter at a season opening event. The locals will literally be “ringing in” the new season; about 30 young men from Klosters will parade with their bells through the village and around a large fire. As you’d expect, Santa Claus will also be putting in an appearance at this special event.
New concept for Saveurs Gstaad
The “Saveurs Gstaad” gourmet week, a fixture on Gstaad’s busy calendar for nearly 20 years, is being extended from 2016. The new schedule will feature connoisseur gatherings held regularly throughout the year, allowing for a greater variety of events on the programme.
Wine Tasting at Lake Geneva’s La côte
The wine producers of La Cote region offer winetasting for tourists. They offer 6 glasses for 15 CHF (for free if 6 bottles are bought). More than 40 producers offer this arrangement.
Lichtenstein exhibition, Kunsthaus Bern
One of the world’s most beautiful private collections offers a glimpse of its works; the centuries-old collection policy of the Princes of Liechtenstein forms the focus of the new exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Bern, which opens its doors from 12 November 2016 until 26 March 2017. The vast treasures of the Princes of Liechtenstein will be represented by a wide variety of works.
Hibernation exhibition, Natural History Museum Chur
From this autumn, a snowy winter landscape will adorn the Graubünden Natural History Museum. The exhibit will tell 31 success stories of animals, plants and fungi that defy winter through morphological, physiological or biochemical adaptations. Three heartbeats per minute, air-filled fur or antifreeze in the cell sap – the ingenuity of nature will astound you. From 9 September 2016 until 22 January 2017.
Christmas in England exhibition, Baden
The Christmas exhibition at the Children’s Museum will showcase English Christmas traditions and their origins. A selection of traditional folk art, toys and children’s books will also be on display. Three people will talk about the Christmas traditions of their childhood in video and audio presentations, while children from England document their present-day Christmases with photos.
Space misson exhibition, Museum of Transport Lucerne
The main attraction of the new space travel exhibition at the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne from 25 November 2016 is the “space transformer”. Just like in a space station, visitors will be able to walk on the walls and ceiling, which will give them a feeling of weightlessness. Adventurous visitors will be able to put themselves to the test on a multi-axis trainer. The machine makes it possible to experience at first-hand how astronauts prepare for their mission in space.
Der Blaue Reiter exhibition, Fondation Beyeler Basel
For the first time in thirty years, a comprehensive exhibition in Switzerland will be devoted to the fascinating chapter in modern art known as “Der Blaue Reiter”. The Munich exhibition in 1911 and the art movement of the same name resulted in a revolutionary new art experience. The works by Wassily Kandinsky that belong to the Beyeler Collection will serve as a starting-point to give members of the public an insight into the work of a group of avant-garde artists whose openness and internationalism were interrupted by the First World War.
Ayurveda by Giardino
